PRASSA UK 2024 Essay Competition

in collaboration with BAPRAS and PLASTA UK

​​​​Titles

  1. "How has the historical evolution of art shaped our views on beauty in the context of plastic surgery?"

  2. "Identify and discuss ethical considerations arising from technological progress and innovation in the field of plastic surgery."

Eligibility

  • Open to all medical students in the UK & Ireland.

  • Must be a member of PLASTA UK (For free membership, please click here)

Submission Criteria

  • The deadline for submissions is on the 15th July 2024 (Extended)

  • Maximum 1,500 words, excluding title, in-text citations and references (Vancouver referencing style).

  • The essay must be original, and not previously entered in other competitions or published.

  • The essay must not incorporate the use of AI at any stage of production. 

  • A plagiarism-checker software will be used to maintain academic integrity.

  • No author identification should be included within the document.

Marking Process

  • Essays marked anonymously by two independent assessors (one from BAPRAS and one from PLASTA).

  • Evaluated in four domains: originality, structure/clarity, knowledge of plastic & reconstructive surgery, and the use of research.

  • Each domain scored up to 5, a total possible score of 20.

​

Prizes and Recognition

  • Award Categories and Rewards:

    • Overall first Place: Twelve-month access to Geeky Medic’s OSCE stations product (typically priced at £30 each).

    • First Runner-Up: Six-month subscription to Amboss.

    • Second Runner-Up: Three-month Amboss subscription.

    • Third Runner-Up: One-month Amboss subscription.

  • All Participants Will Get:

    • Fifteen-day Amboss subscription.

    • A 10% discount code for Geeky Medic’s OSCE stations and OSCE flashcards products.

    • A 10% discount code for the first month of the Pass the MRCS subscription.

  • Additional Benefits:

    • Winners will receive certificates and recognition on our social media platforms, beneficial for building a professional portfolio.

    • Winning abstracts and essays will be published on PRASSA’s website, social media platforms, and/or newsletter bulletin.

Marking Criteria

Originality

  • 5 Points - Presents a unique perspective, argument or insight; demonstrates innovative thinking and a fresh approach to the topic.

  • 4 Points - Shows some original thoughts but may rely somewhat on existing literature or ideas.

  • 3 Points - Offers conventional insights; displays minimal originality in approach or perspective.

  • 2 Points - Lacks original thought; relies heavily on clichés or well-trodden paths.

  • 1 Point - No evidence of originality; entirely derivative of existing work.

  • 0 Points - Originality not applicable or not present.

 

Structure/ Clarity

  • 5 Points - Essay is exceptionally well-organised; arguments are clear, logically structured, and easy to follow.

  • 4 Points - Good organisation; arguments are mostly clear with minor lapses in logic or flow.

  • 3 Points - Adequate structure; some arguments may be difficult to follow or disjointed.

  • 2 Points - Poor organisation; arguments are not logically structured, making comprehension challenging.

  • 1 Point - Very poor organisation and clarity; the essay is difficult to understand.

  • 0 Points - Lacks any coherent structure or clarity.

 

Knowledge of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

  • 5 Points - Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the field; incorporates a wide range of relevant information effectively.

  • 4 Points - Shows good knowledge of the subject; relevant information is used appropriately.

  • 3 Points - Displays basic understanding; some relevant information is included but not always used effectively.

  • 2 Points - Limited knowledge of the subject; few relevant details are included.

  • 1 Point - Minimal understanding; lacks significant relevant information or comprehension of the field.

  • 0 Points - No evidence of knowledge related to plastic & reconstructive surgery.

 

Use of Research

  • 5 Points - Excellent use of research; sources are relevant, well-integrated, and enhance the argument or narrative.

  • 4 Points - Good research application; sources contribute to the essay, though integration may be uneven.

  • 3 Points - Adequate use of research; sources are somewhat relevant but not always well-integrated.

  • 2 Points - Limited or poor use of research; sources are minimally relevant and poorly integrated.

  • 1 Point - Very limited or irrelevant research; sources do not contribute meaningfully to the essay.

  • 0 Points - No research or use of sources evident.

 

Additional Notes

  • Plagiarism: Any evidence of plagiarism or the use of artificial intelligence text generator will result in immediate disqualification and a score of 0.

  • Word Count: Essays exceeding the 1,500-word limit will be penalized by deducting 1 point from the total score for every 100 words over the limit.

  • Referencing Style: Failure to use Vancouver referencing style as specified will result in a deduction of 2 points from the total score.

  • Author Identification: Inclusion of any author identification within the document will result in a 5-point deduction from the total score to maintain anonymity.
